On Friday and Saturday, May 18th and 19th, I will be performing two nights of music at CHURCHILL GROUNDS, Atlanta’s premier jazz club. Usually Churchill Grounds presents the same band each weekend on both Friday and Saturday night, but this time I’m doing something different – bringing two projects for completely different shows each night.
On Friday, May 18th, CC Booker III returns to Churchill Grounds with a great line-up: David Ellington on organ, Rick Lollar on guitar, and Justin Chesarek on drums. We’ll play two sets – 9:30 and 11:30 PM – $10 cover and a $10 minimum.
Then on Saturday, May 19th, I’m presenting a new project that I’ve been developing this Spring along with pianist Rich Rowlinson and bassist Tim Delaney. It’s called “Will Scruggs Plays Pretty for the People” (a name inspired by this classic record). Although I’m still blowing plenty of saxophone with this new band, the project has allowed me to focus a lot more on my vocals, developing a unique repertoire of classic jazz standards and novelty songs from the 1930’s and 40’s. The group has a really nice, mellow vibe, and we enjoy entertaining – playing tunes people like to hear and creating a connection with the audience. For this debut at Churchill Grounds, the trio will be joined by Justin Chesarek on drums. And like Friday the 18th, we’ll play two sets (9:30 & 11:30), $10 cover and $10 minimum.
Come on out for both nights! We hope to see you there! (photo by Mark Adams)
